Colegio Ábaco joins BEDA Programme
From Friday 8th October, Colegio Ábaco is officially part of the BEDA Programme for bilingual schools. In a ceremony to close the first ‘Jornada de Bilingüismo’ hosted by BEDA in Madrid, our school was among those presented with the diploma and plaque to show that we are full members of this programme.
The BEDA (Bilingual English Development and Assessment) Programme was set up just over two years ago by a group of schools in collaboration with the examining branch of the University of Cambridge, Cambridge ESOL, with the intention of establishing an external body to supervise the bilingual projects of member schools. There are currently over two hundred schools in the programme, in Madrid, Castilla la Mancha and Murcia, producing over 8500 candidates for the Cambridge exams last year.
Within the BEDA Programme there are four levels of participation, according to the bilingual project presented by each school. The most basic level is Participant. This level is open to schools which show their intention of developing a bilingual project but which are in the design stage at present.
The second level is that of Reinforcement of English – schools at this level have taken the first steps in the development of a bilingual project, such as increasing the number of hours dedicated to English. Most of the schools in the programme are currently at this level (151 out of 206).
The third level is that of Bilingual Model. In this level, schools have a mature, developed bilingual project functioning in Primary, with other subjects being taught through the medium of English occupying at least a third of the total timetable. In addition these schools have the support of native teachers in the classroom and are actively participating in the exams provided by Cambridge ESOL. At present there are 25 schools in this level, including the three schools in our educational group.
The final level is Bilingual Excellence, which builds on the Bilingual Model to include participation in European language projects and virtual exchanges. There are two schools currently in this level of the BEDA Programme.
Participation in the BEDA Programme is an important step for our school, but it does not mean that there will be major changes in our bilingual project. The project we have presented to BEDA is very much what we are already doing here in the school. Obviously, our project will grow and change as it matures, and our hope is that in the near future we will be able to enter the Bilingual Excellence level of the programme. El Colegio Ábaco se une al Programa BEDA
Desde el viernes 8 de octubre, el Colegio Ábaco pertenece oficialmente al Programa BEDA para colegios bilingües. En una ceremonia que cerraba la primera ‘Jornada de Bilingüismo’ organizada por BEDA en Madrid, nuestro Colegio recibió el diploma y la placa que muestran que ya somos miembros de pleno derecho en el programa.
El Programa BEDA (Bilingual English Development and Assessment) se creó hace un poco más de dos años por un grupo de colegios en colaboración con el departamento de exámenes de la Universidad de Cambridge, Cambridge ESOL, con el fin de establecer una entidad externa para supervisar los proyectos bilingües de los colegios miembros. Actualmente hay más de doscientos colegios en el programa, en Madrid, Castilla la Mancha y Murcia, examinando más de 8500 alumnos con los exámenes de Cambridge el curso pasado.
Dentro del Programa BEDA existen cuatro niveles de participación, según el proyecto bilingüe presentado por cada centro. El nivel más básico es el de Participante. Este nivel está abierto a aquellos colegios que muestran la intención de desarrollar un proyecto bilingüe pero que están todavía en el proceso de diseñarlo.
El segundo nivel es él de Potenciación del Inglés – colegios en este nivel han tomado los primeros pasos en el desarrollo de un proyecto bilingüe propio, por ejemplo ampliando el número de horas de inglés. La mayoría de los colegios en el programa están actualmente en este nivel (151 de los 206).
El tercer nivel es el de Modelo Bilingüe. En este nivel, los centros tienen un proyecto bilingüe ya desarrollado y funcionando en la etapa de Primaria, incluyendo la enseñanza de otras asignaturas con el inglés como lengua vehicular para que la enseñanza en inglés ocupe al menos un tercio del horario del horario. Además estos colegios cuentan con el apoyo de profesores nativos en el aula y participan activamente en la evaluación externa a través de los exámenes de Cambridge. Actualmente hay 25 colegios en este nivel, incluidos los tres colegios de nuestro grupo educativo.
El último nivel es el de Excelencia Bilingüe, que tiene como base el Modelo Bilingüe añadiendo participación en proyectos lingüísticos europeos e intercambios virtuales. Actualmente hay dos colegios en este nivel del Programa BEDA.
La participación en el Programa BEDA es un paso importante para nuestro centro, pero no significa que habrá grandes cambios en nuestro proyecto bilingüe. El proyecto que hemos entregado a BEDA es realmente lo que ya estamos haciendo en el Colegio. Obviamente nuestro proyecto crecerá y se modificará conforme se madura, y nuestra esperanza es que en un futuro cercano podremos entrar en el nivel de Excelencia Bilingüe. Enhorabuena a todos los profesores y miembros de la Comunidad escolar que han trabajado tanto para hacer realidad este proyecto.
